However, as the months progressed, I found myself waking at 5:30 am to complete darkness, driving an hour to my placement in more darkness, and starting the school day at 7:30 am while still looking out at the moon and stars, the sun just barely starting to awaken for the day. I would start my day off tired, having awoken before the sun, and I quickly realized the students were most likely just as tired as I was, waking up before the sun day-in and day-out.
It is hard to believe that we are forcing children and teenagers out of their beds at such an early hour in the morning, most of the time, before the sun has even risen. We then expect them to come to class ready to learn, and to be excited about the day, but how can they when they are too tired from lack of sleep to even think straight?
